"Tapping into Twain" |
|
Mark your calendars for Friday, October 3rd, 5:30-10pm and join us
at the
Mark Twain House & Museum, 351 Farmington Ave, Hartford for
"Oktoberfest 2008!" Live music, Mark Twain impressionist, silent
auction and local restaurant fare will round out an evening of
tasting the finest brews of New England. As you may be aware, The
Mark Twain House, a non-profit historical museum, has been facing a
very difficult financial crisis. A series of fundraisers scheduled
for this fall will help to keep the doors open and the legacy of
Mark Twain alive! Please plan to be a part of this truly
"historical" event and do your part to help save this venerable
museum.

"Hello all you 'Pipes in
the Valley' fans
out there;" "I am Highland Harry and I'll be at the festival with my good
friends from Highland Park Markets." " I do hope you'll stop by and say
'Hello' !" |
When domestic violence,
natural disasters, accidents or other traumatic experiences strike
Connecticut families, innocent, vulnerable children are often the
real victims. Possible long-term emotional effects on a child can be
offset by the investigating police officer in the form of something
as simple as offering the child a teddy bear. But teddy bears can be
costly and supplies won’t last forever.
That’s why
Highland Park Markets, along with the support of the Connecticut
Police Chiefs Association, is stepping in to bring a new program
called “Bears for Kids” to life. |

No Beer, No Civilization
. . . "The search
for unpolluted drinking water is as old as civilization itself. As
soon as there were mass human settlements, waterborne diseases like
dysentery became a crucial population bottleneck. For much of human
history, the solution to this chronic public-health issue was not
purifying the water supply. The solution was to drink alcohol."
Often the most pure fluid available was alcohol -- in beer and,
later, wine -- which has antibacterial properties. Sure, alcohol has
its hazards, but as Johnson breezily observes, "Dying of cirrhosis
of the liver in your forties was better than dying of dysentery in
your twenties." Besides, alcohol, although it is a poison, and an
addictive one, became, especially in beer, a driver of a
species-strengthening selection process.
